How do fixed opinions make life smaller?

The frame first removes detail. Instead of meeting this person, place or choice, you meet the category already in your mind. Anything that fits the opinion becomes proof. Anything that does not fit is treated as an exception, ignored or pushed outside the picture.

Then it removes relationship. Curiosity has no work to do when the answer is settled in advance. Conversation becomes an attempt to confirm, correct or defeat. Other people learn that they can be known only by agreeing with the version of them you already hold.

Finally, it removes possible selves. If respectable people never change careers, you cannot examine work that suits you better. If asking for help always means weakness, support remains unavailable even when you need it. A fixed opinion about the world becomes a wall inside your own life.

Opening the frame does not mean every idea is equally true or every act acceptable. Some convictions protect life and dignity precisely because they are firm. The useful question is whether a belief is doing moral work or merely preventing new information from reaching you.

Try adding one detail before making the usual judgment. What happened before this moment? What does the other person see that you do not? What evidence could change your view? What remains wrong even after you understand the context?

An open mind is not an empty one. It can hold a clear belief while allowing reality to show more colour, more cause and more human difference than the first frame contained.
