When Innocent says he wants to be rich, he means something wider than money. “I want to be rich; not just to be wealthy but I want a rich life.” Rich the way a meal is nutritious — a life that is actually good for him.

Money can’t buy most of what he’s after. He wants purpose, and the right balance of satisfaction and dissatisfaction — enough to love what he has, but still have something to work toward. Above all he wants freedom: to act, to speak, to be who he wants to be.

By his own measure he is rich already if he can wake up knowing his past, understanding his present, and holding hope for the future. Money helps; it just isn’t the whole of the wealth.
