Live is described as the one command everyone was given, which makes it a strange thing for anyone to be able to take away from someone else. Abuse and human rights violations get named as the mechanisms — specific acts, not an abstract failure of kindness. People who deny others that basic command are doing something closer to theft than cruelty: stealing a gift that was never theirs to withhold. Fairness, on this account, is mostly a matter of getting out of the way.
