At the stroke of midnight
Chapter 25 of 30
It happened at midnight, when her heart broke
Streets are deserted,
And no one is in sight.
I locate a house; it’s perfect.
It’ll do just fine for tonight.
I approach it, an object in my right hand.
I step closer to the porch, everything is going as planned.
But before I leave it there,
I pause for a moment of thought.
The reality of what I was doing,
And the consequences I would endure if I got caught.
I remember the recent events,
That led to this predicament.
It happened at midnight.
He had just broken up with me,
And I wasn’t thinking right.
Left holding his baby,
Our baby in my arms, alone, crying.
I couldn’t bear the thought of raising him by myself.
So I decided to abandon him and leave him with someone who might.
I decided to leave him at some random person’s doorstep, in the middle of the night,
Hoping that they would take him in the morning, and maybe raise him right.
My thoughts lead me back to common sense.
Back to sanity.
I can’t do it, I love him too much.
He is all I have and I should treat him as such.
I rush back home, still in shock over what I almost did.
Only to find his father back, saying sorry, as he lay in my bed.
