Have you lost your mind?
Chapter 7 of 30
Just how far a broken heart can go
The bartender gives me a shot.
I put the glass to my mouth, and tilt my head backwards,
And I drink it all in one gulp, even though it is really hot.
Pain is not a worry for me now,
My heart is already filled with so much of it.
Everyone in the bar looks at me, wondering how,
The woman I call my wife managed to keep the secret.
I can feel their pity.
It is weighing down on me like a wet blanket.
And because I live in a small city,
Everyone knew, and I was the last to know about it.
So I drink more whiskey,
Alone and conversing with no one.
Hoping for the pain to cease quickly,
Before I walk out and drive back home.
In time, I get intoxicated,
And walk right out of the bar.
My vision is blurred, but I still make it to my car.
I sit behind the wheel, and drive home,
But someone has entered the car with me.
I don’t recognize who it is, but I don’t care.
I just speed through the streets, acting like there is no one there.
Now evil thoughts consume me,
A strong desire to revenge,
To vent my anger, and bring things to an end.
In no condition to contemplate further,
I do what I instinctively do whenever,
I feel threatened and surrounded by danger.
I get out of the car and into my house.
I climb the stairs, and enter the bedroom.
She’s still seated by the bedside,
Exactly where I left her three hours ago.
I look into her eyes and feel anger rise inside.
She opens her mouth, but no words come out,
As her eyes meet the barrel of my pistol, that I’m now waving about.
“I loved you, and I still do,” I say.
She is in shock, and is clearly terrified.
“But you betrayed my trust, and took my love for granted.”
Tears flow down her cheeks, as she kneels on the floor.
She apologizes, begs me not to kill her,
But I aim the gun at her, not wanting to hear her any more.
“I’m sorry, but you caused it all. This is not what I wanted.”
I was ready to pull the trigger,
When I heard a voice yell from behind.
“What are you doing? Have you lost your mind?”
But I pull the trigger anyway,
And a loud bang sounds.
I’m forced to look away,
As her body drops to the ground.
“What have I done?” I ask myself.
“Have you lost your mind?” The voice asks.
