“Hard work that doesn't pay off might hurt, but it makes you stronger and teaches you paths you ought to avoid in the future.”

Work can be honest, difficult, and still fail to produce the hoped-for result. The loss hurts more when time and sacrifice had made the outcome feel earned.

That effort is not therefore empty. It reveals which path does not lead where expected, which forces can undo good work, and what the next attempt may need to avoid. Strength also grows through surviving a result that effort could not control.

The lesson does not replace the reward or make the failure fair. It is what remains available after the reward is gone. A path that proved wrong can still save future time, and the person leaving it may carry more knowledge than the one who first entered.
